Travel journal prompts

The best travel journals aren't the prettiest ones, they're the ones with the details you'd otherwise forget: the name of the café, what the rain smelt like, what the waiter said. These prompts help you catch them — before you go, while you're there, and once you're home.

  1. 1Before I go: what am I most looking forward to?
  2. 2What am I nervous about?
  3. 3What did I pack that I'll probably never use?
  4. 4Describe the journey there, including the bit that went wrong.
  5. 5What's the first thing I noticed when I arrived?
  6. 6What did I eat today? Where? Would I go back?
  7. 7What's a word or phrase I learned here?
  8. 8What does this place smell like?
  9. 9Who did I meet, even just for a minute?
  10. 10What surprised me today?
  11. 11What's something here that's better than at home?
  12. 12What's something I miss about home?
  13. 13Where would I take a friend if I came back?
  14. 14Describe the view from where I'm sitting right now.
  15. 15What's the best thing I did today that wasn't planned?
  16. 16What souvenir would I bring back if it could be anything?
  17. 17What did this trip teach me?
  18. 18Once home: what do I want to remember in ten years?
  19. 19What would I do differently next time?
  20. 20Where next?

How to use these

Pick one, set a timer for ten minutes, and write without stopping to correct anything. Don't worry about answering the question exactly — the prompt is only there to get the pen moving. If one doesn't land, skip it. Try the random prompt generator if you can't choose.
