Reading journal prompts

A reading journal is more fun than a list of titles. These prompts are for writing about the book you've just finished — and about you as a reader, which is often the more interesting part.

  1. 1What was the first line of this book, and did it hook me?
  2. 2Which character would I most like to have a cup of tea with?
  3. 3Which character annoyed me, and why?
  4. 4Where and when did I read most of this book?
  5. 5What's one sentence I want to remember? Copy it out.
  6. 6Did the ending feel right? How would I have ended it?
  7. 7Who would I recommend this book to?
  8. 8Which book have I read more than twice?
  9. 9What book did I love as a child?
  10. 10What's a book everyone loves that I didn't?
  11. 11Which book changed how I think about something?
  12. 12What's the best setting of any book I've read?
  13. 13Which author would I like to meet?
  14. 14What do I look for in a book when I'm tired?
  15. 15What's on my 'to be read' pile, and which am I avoiding?
  16. 16Which book would I like to live inside for a week?
  17. 17Describe my ideal reading spot.
  18. 18What's a book I abandoned, and would I try it again?
  19. 19Which genre have I never tried?
  20. 20What was my favourite book of the year so far?

How to use these

Pick one, set a timer for ten minutes, and write without stopping to correct anything. Don't worry about answering the question exactly — the prompt is only there to get the pen moving. If one doesn't land, skip it. Try the random prompt generator if you can't choose.
