New year journal prompts

The turn of the year is the most natural moment there is for a journal — but 'what are your resolutions?' is a question almost nobody enjoys. These prompts look back kindly and forward hopefully, and leave the gym membership out of it.

  1. 1What were the three best moments of last year?
  2. 2What was the hardest thing, and how did I get through it?
  3. 3What surprised me about last year?
  4. 4Who mattered most to me last year?
  5. 5What did I finish that I'm proud of?
  6. 6What did I start that I'd like to continue?
  7. 7What's one word I'd like to guide this year?
  8. 8How do I want to feel on an ordinary day this year?
  9. 9What would I like to learn?
  10. 10Where would I like to go?
  11. 11Who would I like to spend more time with?
  12. 12What would I like to do less of?
  13. 13What's something small I could do every week?
  14. 14What's a dream I've been quietly putting off?
  15. 15What does a good year look like to me — not a perfect one, a good one?
  16. 16What do I need to let go of to make room?
  17. 17Write a letter to myself to open next December.
  18. 18What's one thing I'd like to try for the very first time?
  19. 19What kind of friend do I want to be this year?
  20. 20What am I looking forward to most in the next month?

How to use these

Pick one, set a timer for ten minutes, and write without stopping to correct anything. Don't worry about answering the question exactly — the prompt is only there to get the pen moving. If one doesn't land, skip it. Try the random prompt generator if you can't choose.
