January journal prompts

January has a reputation for fresh starts, but mostly it's dark at four o'clock and everyone's skint. These prompts are for the real January: gentle, a bit reflective, and not one of them asks you to become a new person by Monday.

  1. 1What do I want to carry over from last year, and what can stay there?
  2. 2Describe the cosiest corner of your home right now, in as much detail as you can.
  3. 3What's one small thing I could do every day this month that I'd actually enjoy?
  4. 4Which three words would I like people to use about my year, come December?
  5. 5What did I learn last year that I didn't expect to?
  6. 6Write about a winter walk — real or imagined. What could you hear?
  7. 7What am I looking forward to in the next three months?
  8. 8If this year had a theme song, what would I want it to be?
  9. 9What does a good ordinary Tuesday look like for me?
  10. 10List ten things that cost nothing and make me feel better.
  11. 11Who do I want to see more of this year?
  12. 12What's a skill I'd like to be a little better at by the summer?
  13. 13Describe the best thing I ate over the holidays.
  14. 14What would I tell myself this time last year?
  15. 15What's the one thing on my to-do list I keep avoiding, and why?

How to use these

Pick one, set a timer for ten minutes, and write without stopping to correct anything. Don't worry about answering the question exactly — the prompt is only there to get the pen moving. If one doesn't land, skip it. Try the random prompt generator if you can't choose.
